Description

For more than 100 years now, the Jungfrau Railway has been taking people up to Europe's highest train station at a height of 3,454 metres above sea level, in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch". Starting from Kleine Scheidegg, the rack-and-pinion railway operates the whole year round, taking people through the tunnel that leads up a steep slope to the Jungfraujoch.

How to get there:

Take the Wengernalp Railway via Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen to Kleine Scheidegg, then change to the Jungfrau Railway to get to Jungfraujoch

or

Take the "Eiger Express" cable car from the Grindelwald terminal up to the Eiger Glacier, then change on to the Jungfrau Railway to get to Jungfraujoch

Timetable: operates all year round

Length of journey: 2 h 10 min (by train via Grindelwald/Lauterbrunnen – Kleine Scheidegg) or 1 h 30 min (by cable car via Grindelwald – Eiger Glacier)

Attractions: from Kleine Scheidegg, a nine-kilometre train ride, climbing almost 1,400 metres in altitude, with a little over seven kilometres in the mountain (tunnel); Ice Palace, Ice Gateway, Sphinx viewing terrace, hiking trails in the "eternal" snow, Alpine Research Exhibition in summer.
