Lake Brienz

Together with its neighbour Lake Thun, this turquoise green lake is surrounded by the impressive backdrop of the mountains of the Bernese Oberland.

Here you will find the popular "Lötschberg" paddle steamer from the Belle Époque period (built in 1914) which has a wonderful nostalgic ambience that enchants its passengers.

Description

Lake Brienz is surrounded on all sides by steep mountain slopes and in some areas by untouched nature. Regular boat trips have been operating on Lake Brienz since as far back as 1839, and today the fleet comprises five ships. During the summer, as well as the regular trips, you can also go on a "Fondue ship" or a "Breakfast ship", have an "Alpine brunch" or enjoy a "Halal BBQ cruise".

The scheduled boat trips connect Interlaken with the idyllic village of Brienz to the east, at the upper end of the lake. Switzerland's oldest steam-powered rack-and-pinion railway, the Brienz-Rothorn Railway, departs from here, taking passengers up to the summit of the Brienzer Rothorn.

A further tourist destination for the ships on Lake Brienz is the Giessbach Falls. These mighty waterfalls crash down to the lake via a number of different stages covering a total of 500 meters in height. Next to the falls, you will see the historical Giessbach Grand Hotel, which can be reached via Europe's oldest funicular railway, starting out from the landing stage.
