Lake Thun

At the northern edge of the Alps, between the towns of Thun and Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland,

you will find the deep blue waters of Lake Thun, surrounded by an impressive backdrop of mountain landscape.

Lake Thun is especially popular with sailors and surfers who appreciate the fact that there is always a light breeze. Along the shore of the lake, you will find countless lidos and bathing areas where you can go to cool down on hot days.

Here you will find the popular "Lötschberg" paddle steamer from the Belle Époque period (built in 1914) which has a wonderful nostalgic ambience that enchants its passengers.

A boat trip is an especially good way of exploring the many facets of the region around Lake Thun.

From the Beatushöhlen-Sundlauenen landing stage, for example, there is a lovely hiking trail that leads up to the impressive Karst caves with their enormous stalagmites and stalactites and huge waterfalls.

On the opposite side of the lake, you will see the picturesque little town of Spiez with its castle and romantic church. Further castles with interesting museums can be found in Thun and on the stretch of the shore that is known as the "Riviera of the Bernese Oberland" due to its mild climate: in Oberhofen and Hünegg Castle near Hilterfingen. Also on the shores of the lake, you will find a further highlight: the musicals that are performed in summer, which are known as the Thunerseespiele.

There are three mountain summits in the area around Lake Thun that are popular for day trips: the pyramid-shaped Niesen, the Stockhorn and the Niederhorn. Visitors who make it to the top are rewarded with a unique view across the lake and the Alps. At the eastern end of the lake is the town of Interlaken, the starting point for many popular excursions to the Jungfrau region and to the eastern section of the Bernese Oberland.
